There’s no single figure — the main cost drivers are the amount of fabric or leather the piece needs, whether the frame, webbing or foam need work as well as the cover, and how intricate the shape is. A simple dining chair seat is a much smaller job than a wingback armchair. We look at your piece (photos are enough to start with) before putting a number on it.

It comes down to what you’ve got. A well-made frame — solid timber, tight joints, no structural rot — is usually a better candidate for reupholstery than replacement, especially once you factor in that new furniture at a comparable build quality often costs more than a re-cover. A chair with a genuinely damaged or low-grade frame is a different question, and we’ll tell you honestly if that’s what we’re looking at.

We quote per job, not by the hour. Upholstery work doesn’t break down neatly into billable hours the way a trade call-out does — the fabric or leather cost, the amount of hand-stitching and the structural work involved all move independently of how long the job takes on the bench. A per-job quote based on your actual piece is a more accurate figure than an hourly rate would be.

Couch and sofa reupholstery costs vary a lot across Australia, mostly driven by the couch’s size, the fabric or leather chosen, and the labour involved in a multi-seat piece versus a single chair. Often, yes — particularly for a solid, well-built piece or one with sentimental value, like a piece passed down in the family. Restoration usually makes less sense for furniture that was low-quality to begin with, or where the frame itself is badly damaged. We’ll give you a straight opinion on your piece as part of a quote, rather than pushing restoration regardless of condition.

Rates vary between workshops and depend heavily on the type of work — upholstery and structural repair (what we do) is priced differently to timber refinishing or French polishing (which we don’t offer). Within our own work, the piece’s size, fabric or leather choice, and the amount of structural repair needed are what move the price. Photos or a call get you an actual figure rather than a guess.

Often, yes. We repair frames, webbing, springs and foam, and reupholster the fabric or leather over the top — that covers a lot of what makes an older piece feel worn out or unsafe to sit on. What we don’t do is timber refinishing or French polishing, so if a piece mainly needs its timber restored rather than its seating, that’s outside what we offer.

Yes — car seat upholstery is one of the seating types we repair, alongside furniture, office and commercial seating, and marine upholstery for boats. That covers torn, worn or stained seat covers, rebuilding flattened or collapsed seat foam, and re-stitching loose seams, in fabric, leather or vinyl.
